TREK - Mount Kerinci, Sumatra (Indonesia) | #RoaringTiger | May & Sept 2020

Mount Kerinci stands tall at 3805m, towering over the Sumatran landscape. It is the highest volcano in Indonesia and the highest peak in Sumatra. On this 2 day trek you will be surrounded by the lush forest of Kerinci Seblat National Park, home to the endangered species of Sumatran Tiger Sumatran Rhinoceros.

You will experience the local village life by staying at a homestay before and after the climb. During the trek, you will be camping in the mountains where you can look for miles and see stars-filled night sky.

Itinerary Overview


Day 1: Arrive in Padang and travel to Kersik Tuo

Arrive into Padang Minangkabau International airport and directly transfer to Kersik Tuo. This is 6-8 hour drive. Highway passes through Bung Hatta National Forest and small cinnamon and fruit plantations.  Arrive at kersik tuo village in the evening. Kersik Tuo at 1500m is a conglomerate of villages surrounded with padi fields and tea plantations. The landscape of Kersik Tuo is dominated by the massive cone of Gunung Kerinci.

Day 2: Kersik Tuoto Gunung Kerinici (7-8 hours walking)
Wake up to the rooster crows at 6am. After a homestay breakfast, you will be driven to the trailhead of Gunung Kerinci for a trek briefing and warm up.

There are 6 checkpoints between the trailhead and the summit.

  • POS 1 (1800m)

  • POS2 (1900m)

  • POS3 (2000m)

  • Shelter 1 (2400m) - Lunch

  • Shelter 2 (3000m)

  • Shelter 3 (3400m) - Dinner and camp

The track is unmarked but well defined and of average gradient till Shelter 2.

Sleep: Tent with sleeping bag 
Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3: Gunung Kerinici to Kersik Tuo (8-10 hours walking)

Early wake up call at 2am followed by light snacks and 3am start for summit climb in cold darkness to the summit at 3805m (approx. 3-4 hours).

After sunrise at approximately 6-6.30am and photo opportunities, you will descend for approx 1.5 to 2 hours to Shelter 2 to enjoy your hot breakfast. We will depart at no later than 10am to walk for approx 6 hours with lunch served enroute, before returning back to your homestay in Kersik Tuo (arriving at about 4pm) for hot shower and pack up ready to depart.

Will arrive at your hotel late evening (approx 10-11pm) in Padang.

Overnight: Homestay

16th June: Day 4: Kersik Tuo to Padang
Another homestay breakfast and then depart at 7am for the return journey to Padang for early evening flight home.

Due to the time it takes to get to Kerinci, there is an option to spend another day on a short hike, or at the homestay to explore the region before heading home.
