Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Mongolia (7D6N)

Gorkhi-Terelj, a very pretty, accessible national park, was established in 1993. Home to the Khan Khentii mountain range it has many natural attractions including spectacular rock formations and a huge variety of wild life with over 250 species of birds passing though the park each year. Gorkhi-Terelj is perfect for those who would love a 5 day trek in the region.

In addition to trekking through the wild green-forests & granitic rocky mountains of Khan Khentii you will get an opportunity to taste local life and culture. Visit with a nomadic herders’ family and even try Airag, which is fermented mare’s milk (airag). Also visit the Ariyabal Buddhist Meditation Centre and Temple.

Drive to Tsonjin Boldog National Resorts home of the Chinggis Khaan’s Grand statue. See picturesque views of open valley with River Tuul. Drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National park.

Explore the mountains and familiarize yourself with tundra walking. See wild deer, Marmot, two hump camels, or anyone of the 121 mammals that call Mongolia home. Trek to the Monastery, built in 1740. Not in great condition but the trek to get there is great.

Head up and over a saddle in the chain of mountains just above the camp. The descent is tricky and requires caution but you are rewarded with beautiful birds and wildflowers at a bubbling creek. Walk over 8km with two descents of 100m each. Camp in a large bowl on the shore of pristine lake near the crown of the mountains.

Climb over a rolling ridge and head through a long pass and a slow descent into the upper "river" region of our route. Excellent wildlife viewing. Return to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park through the Dund Bayan valley.

Breakfast then return to Ulaan Baatar. Head to Bodg Khan National park and trek. In 1783 the local Mongolian government of the Qing Dynasty declared the Bogd Khan a protected site. This makes it the oldest legally protected natural area in the world.
