Amazing Trekkers Club June-July Programmes
June 09, 2020
First and for most, I would like to wish all our Muslim friends Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Mohon Maaf Zahir dan Batin. As we enter the month of Syawal, we are beginning to see a glimmer of light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, or as mountaineers often say, the peak is in sight. This is usually the best part of the climb - the part where we magically get a surge of energy and excitement as we gather the team and get ready to celebrate our achievement on the summit especially after a difficult and challenging experience. However, this particular peak is still obscured by various obstacles along the way. Sadly, we won't be able to travel to our dream mountains just yet and may not be able to train together in a big group as we were pre-COVID. All our treks between February and August have either been postponed or cancelled. Nonetheless, let's count our blessings, be grateful for the measures introduced to keep us safe and focused on the first crest we’ve reached; that is the first easing of Singapore's Circuit Breaker and the next phases 1 and 2 we are all desperate to get into.

Phase 1 and what it means for ATC
As you know, the easing plan will be executed in phases.
Unfortunately for us, the painful truth is that our visit to the mountain will take longer. We are still hoping our Kilimanjaro Trek will go ahead as planned in September for our 14 members and we can climb Taiwan's Jade Mountain on the 22nd of November. Furthermore, we still can’t head to our favourite hill in Bukit Timah as a group because social distancing remains in force for phases 1 and 2. No matter how hard we looked for a break in the cautious lifting of regulations, it’s clear at this point that ATC training and treks will not be possible until early July or even longer - who knows.
What do we do???
1. Let’s continue encouraging one another in our simulated treks! As a group we have completed over 64,664m which is 378,983 steps up! That is just over 7 times the height of Everest. What an achievement ATC!
2. Pivoting to virtual training and community support - I believe quite a few members have benefited from the Zoom sessions every Tuesday and Thursday with Holly over the last 2 months. Let’s continue to build up our holistic body strength with Mountain Yoga every Tuesday and our NEW 30 minutes for 30 Days Get Fit Challenge.

OUR SIMULATED MOUNTAIN CLIMBS
This is how we utilised our free time at home when our plans have been scuppered by Singapore's Circuit Breaker. We were socially distant but emotionally connected with one goal and one vision in our minds. These trekkers dedicated themselves to their love of mountains and even during this crisis we cannot get the mountains out of our system. If we couldn't travel to get to the mountains, we brought the mountains to our homes. A little bit of imagination and a lot of will power and discipline is what it takes to complete these simulated climbs and achieved the steps. These are the mountains we have climbed over the circuit breaker period.
- Conic Hill, Scotland (361m)
- Signal de Botrange, Scotland (694m)
- Gunung Lambak, Malaysia (510m)
- Mount Scenery, Caribbean Netherlands (887m)
- Taal Volcano, Philippines (311m)
- Eiffel Lake, Banff, Canada (400m)
- Broga Hill, Selangor, Malaysia (400m)
- Phu Chong Si, Thailand (420m)
- Mount Rinjani, Indonesia (3726m)
3 of our members Agata Mathiasen, Asmita Ranade and Renata Janini Dohmen climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and 10 Peaks respectively. Agata has now also completed climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest last Sunday, 7th of June whilst Renata has just added Mount Jade to her list of big mountain climbs and is climbing Mount Rinjani as we speak. She is supported by our trekking community in groups of 5 climbers with 5000 steps per person and will take us across 2 weeks to complete as a team. Renata plans to finish the climb in 12.5 days. Good luck to our superwoman and all her cheerleaders. #RinjaniWithRenata.

STAR TREKKERS FOR THE MONTHS OF MARCH TO JUNE 2020
We are all united and strong as a trekking community supporting and motivating one another to get out of our comfort zones and to push our limits. These Amazing Trekkers stood out the most as hardcore climbers with their awe-inspiring strength of character and determination. They just keep climbing and keep training in any circumstances and challenges.
Congratulations to these Star Trekkers who have achieved great things over this challenging period.

- April - Agata Mathiasen

We also delivered home baked cookies and muffins for workers who celebrated Hari Raya. We were thrilled to find out that these workers support NParks and keep our outdoors looking beautiful.
We would love to be able to continue to support this dedicated dormitory site through the next phase. If you would like to make a donation, please message Rina on 9479 0363.

Bon Voyage
To an Amazing Trekker and Leader
Becca Taylor
There’s just no easy way to break the news, we will soon be losing one of our valuable members and Trek Leaders.
Becca who is a core member of the team and instrumental in organising events, training and trek programmes will be leaving Singapore for England in July.
As many of you may know, Becca has played a huge role in our trekking community since inception. Becca has been the caring, kind and patient Trek Leader, a creative, efficient and hardworking Programme and Marketing Director, a cheerleader and “rally-er” in her very gentle and cheerful way. It’s been an honour, a privilege & our pleasure to have Becca in Amazing Trekkers Club. Her professionalism, loyalty, dedication, strength of character and determination will be missed.I know I speak for everyone at ATC in wishing her the very best of luck in the future. I would like to express my deepest appreciation for the tremendous contribution Becca has made in the last 5 years. We find it very difficult to say goodbye to such an amazing friend and incredible mountain sister. Plus the fact that we are not able to organise a special farewell that Becca deserves due to strict social distancing measures has made it even more difficult for all of us. However, we would like to think that this is not goodbye but definitely a See You Soon and Stay In Touch. We will meet again on a mountain again in the near future.
Here’s a little message from Becca, and I hope you will also feel free to message your goodbye to her.
"I have always loved climbing mountains but these last 5 years have added a whole new dimension for me. The power of women, working together and sharing ideas is powerful. I have been fortunate to work for an amazing leader and to spend time with many inspiring women, travelling to beautiful places. Each one of you has touched my heart.
ATC is an incredible community, that always comes together to achieve beautiful things. We work as a team and have a host of experts to support and guide us. I know for sure that ATC is in good hands with the amazing trek leaders and experts we know and love. With the vision and energy that our inspirational founder Hazleen has, I am excited for ATC to grow and expand over the next few months and years. Hazleen has always been core to all strategies, activities, training and plans each and every trek with meticulous detail.
I will always hold ATC close to my heart and would love to be an UK Ambassador for ATC, something that has been in the strategy since inception.
Every month we award a Star Trekker and this award goes to members who have gone that extra kilometre and inspired the rest of the community. It is important for us all to keep challenging our friends, to keep dreaming of that next mountain summit, to push for that next round of stairs. You do it already and I know you will keep it going. ATC is a community of ladies who love trekking! Each one of you makes the community what it is today!
The world can be a small place, we will meet again on a mountain top somewhere." ~ Becca Taylor
We hope to bring our Mountain Sisters back to the trail as soon as we possibly can. Meanwhile, stay strong and healthy and we look forward to seeing you on ATC Live throughout June and July!
