CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR JULY STAR TREKKER  SUNIDER (SUE) KAUR
Our inspirational Malaysian trekker, who now calls Singapore home, joined ATC earlier this year having never trekked before. She had a dream to climb to Everest Base Camp… and she is, a few weeks' time!

“I got to know about ATC through a friend, Kartika in Feb this year. I recall my first walk at Bukit Timah Hill, guided by Rebecca. Since then I have trekked up 6 mountains; Gunung Lambak, Pine Tree Hill, Bukit Apek/Saga in Malaysia, followed by Gunung Bintan, Indonesia. I then climbed Mount Batur with my husband and my 11 years old daughter Rheanna, and then just recently , I trekked up Mount Kinabalu with my best friend Shoba who is also a member of ATC.

I always loved mountains but never thought that I could challenge myself due to various medical issues. Being able to share the experience and hike up with family and friends has been amazing.

With every hike that I do I get stronger so I pick more challenging mountains to push my limits. This has given me a lot more confidence than I could even imagine. One thing I'm sure of, hiking and me are for life.

I may not be there yet, but I am closer then I was yesterday"

We are so pleased that we found each other Sue, for we are a better club with members like you! We hope that you continue to conquer mountain after mountain after mountain and enjoy the beauty and serenity that it has to offer.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AUGUST STAR TREKKER YEO KAH WEI (QUINEE)!
Our wonderfully fun loving and funny Malaysian member, Quinee signed up for 5 treks consecutively even before one trek is completed.

Quinee first met us in January this year at our information evening as she was keen to join our Mount Kinabalu trek. Although she was not able to participate in the Mt. Kinabalu trek due to work commitment as a financial expert, Quinee joined 18 ladies summit Lantau, Sunset Peaks and Dragons Back. She has also summited Gunung Lambak, Gunung Bentan, Mount Fuji, Gunung Leadang and recently conquered our challenging trek Gunung Merapi.

According to Quinee, "Everything about my trekking trips have been really Amazing! Amazing Trekkers Club is great, a very efficient organisation especially for us women trekkers. What I love about this club is I can get all the help I need from the team and the members. The trek leader, local guide, mountain guides, food and accommodation are always fantastic, logistics carried out efficiently and prepared sufficiently. I always enjoy and love going on trips and treks with ATC and I've now made such amazing friends from being with this community of adventurous and active women. We train together and have wonderful conversations. I love it! "

Quinee, Mount Rinjani is calling your name... May 2018! Can't wait to trek with you again! Oh yes...and Kilimanjaro in September 2018.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SEPTEMBER STAR TREKKER JUSTINE FEIGHERY

Justine found her way to the Amazing Trekkers in January through Eat Train Love. As an avid hiker in the U.S., she missed the physical and mental challenges of climbing mountains, and the satisfaction of achieving your goals when reaching the top. After just one email exchange with Hazleen, Justine signed up for Lambak in February, Hong Kong in May and Mt. Merapi in October. “I knew right away what I wanted to accomplish this year, and what mountains would help me achieve that. I also felt immediately supported by Hazleen, Becca and Shah and trusted them enough to sign up for trekking adventures that were 9 months away!”

For Justine, climbing mountains is a moving meditation – a way to identify and break past her limits, find her inner strength and push herself to quiet her mind and focus only on the journey ahead. Being part of this group has inspired her to include hikes during her personal travels, whether that be conquering the Twins in HK, or a sunrise hike of Mt. Batur to prepare for Merapi. You can find her training for her next adventures on Tuesdays – feeling the burn as she pushes up 120+ flights of stairs, waking up early Sundays to sweat at BT hill, or around town doing yoga, spin class or F45, where she was recently 1 of 8 winners (from 70 people) who completed an 8 week diet and fitness challenger to become stronger and more confident in themselves.

But above all, her favorite thing about the trekkers is the people she has met. “I love being a member of ATC, because I get to meet amazing, strong, funny and supportive women from all over the world – and I know that when the day comes that I have to return the U.S., I can find them across the globe, trekking in Asia, Africa and LAC. It is a group that I will be part of for a lifetime!”

ZafigoX PENANG
The first ever women and travel event in Asia. ATC was there represented by Club President Hazleen and Vice President Shah, to lead a workshop and speak in a panel moderated by Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir. They had interesting conversations with the Mayor of Penang Dato' Maimunah who was also a trekker herself, with the main sponsor Maybank Investment Bank and other inspiring speakers at the event. Hazleen and Shah conducted a successful workshop: "How to prepare for a high altitude trek" and Hazleen was a Panelist for the topic "It Was Tough, It Hurt, But I did it, And It Made Me Feel Proud". Following the event, the duo took advantage of a local mountain and did the Penang Hill Trek without a guide only because ZafigoX means Safe I Go... Solo.

IWFCI - KUALA LUMPAR
Hazleen was Kuala Lumpur to be a part of a spectacular event organised by IWFCI, International Women Federation of Commerce & Industry - a non-profit and non-government organisation that provides women entrepreneurs access and resources to participate in business and networking opportunities in an ever changing global marketplace.

One of the mandate is to promote and empower women leadership and it was such a privilege to be invited as a panelist at the Global Women's Trade Summit. The theme: Women, Changing the Global Economy. Topic of the Speaking Panel: From Local to Global.

What a fabulous opportunity to meet inspiring women who have made such a positive impact in their community and now helping others through a strong network that focuses on business growth and support to overcome challenges.

As a travel company and a trekking community, we strongly believe the principle of progressive resistance operates in every area of our lives. The bigger and heavier the load, the stronger you get! That is why we all need to be challenged. We must seek out and rise to the great challenges that are thrust upon us. Too often, there is simply no other way.

The reason that so many people never fulfill their potential is not a lack of intelligence, opportunity or resources, but a lack of belief in themselves. Or put another way, too little self-confidence. When you accomplish an audacious goal your belief in who you are – and what you are capable of – shifts in almost direct proportion with the size of the goal.

Let's dream big, set goals and take action. Let's climb a mountain. You'll be amazed how life changing it can be. It transforms our mind and expands our view of the world. It changes everything!

GUNUNG LEDANG, MALAYSIA - 26th AUG 17
Congratulations to each and everyone from our 5th batch of Ledang conquerors! Challenging trek? Oh Yes! Great Feeling? Most definitely. Incredible achievements especially for these ladies who began their trekking journey with us not so long ago. The trek leaders, Becca and Julia kept the team safe and injury free. Everyone went home with dreams achieved and desires fulfilled...after climbing stairs, rocks, ladders, and big boulders all the way to the peak and back down. Well done Cathy, Berit, Elisabeth, Angela, Connie, June and Quinee.
MOUNT KINABALU, SABAH MALAYSIA - 12th SEPT 17
Standing on Malaysia's highest point (4095m) gave Team KK (Karen, Lynne, Kate, Alice, Cathy, Hazleen, Shah and Ani) a complete Borneo experience after walking through 6 distinguishable vegetation zones; Lower Mountain Forest, Upper Mountain Forest, Ultrabasic Rock Forest, Lower Granite Boulder Forest, Upper Granite Boulder Forest and the subalpine summit. It exemplifies the island to its very best, a World Heritage Site well-known worldwide for its extensive botanical and biological species biodiversity with plants of Himalayan, Australasian, and Indomalayan origin. We spent hours admiring spectacular sceneries and unique flora in one of the ecologically richest in the world. The journey was a wonderful conquest for us and gave us a great sense of accomplishment; despite the post trek body aches and sore legs.

Because of its reputation as the highest mountain in Southeast Asia and one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world, overcoming the challenge of conquering this majestic mountain was motivating and gave us a powerful feeling of victory! It is a complete MUST and highly recommended for those preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro or joining our Everest Base Camp & Kala Patthar expedition. It took a lot of mental and physical efforts and everyone in the group had to work together to make this trip pleasant, memorable and successful. We came home with memories to last a lifetime. What an AMAZING team!
MOUNT KILIMANJARO - 15th SEPT 17
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Congratulations to our 6 Amazing Kili trekkers (Becca, Min, Julia, Anja, Connie and Desi) who successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro in the early hours of Thursday 21st September.

They followed the Lemosho Route on the western side, traversing across the most spectacular parts of the mountain. The team acclimatised well and experienced the afromontane forest, Shira Plateau, glacial valleys, alpine desert, glaciers and finally reaching the roof of Africa at 5895m!

For 7 days they walked, talked, laughed and cried! Most importantly they had the mental strength to keep going and with strong team bonding, they supported each other through the tough days. You deserve the rewards ladies. Well done!

In addition to climbing, they visited two schools in Arusha, Kilimanjaro. With money raised by our members throughout 2017, via our Golden Girls with Golden Hearts Project, donations were made to Engilanget School for the Disabled and Precious Orphanage.

BOROBUDOR & MOUNT MERAPI - YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA - 29th SEPT 17
Team Merapi had an epic journey of yoga, Borobudur Temple and Mountain...  a must when you're in Yogyakarta.

Sitting on a hill in central Java, surrounded by volcanoes and lush, green fields, lies the magnificent temple of Borobudur. This vast 9th-century structure was buried under a blanket of jungle and volcanic ash before it was unearthed by then British Raja of Indonesia, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, in the early 19th century. Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and the most visited tourist site in Indonesia. With its palpable spiritualty and striking architectural beauty, the huge stone temple draws pilgrims and tourists from around the globe.

Mount Merapi team was united, fierce and strong! As written by team member, Michelle, "From Buddhist to Catholic to Jewish to Muslim (and possibly Hindu?), from Singapore, Malaysia, the US, England and Australia, from young spring chickens to 56 year olds, from complete beginners to experienced, “fast and furious” trekkers, we hiked up Mount Merapi."

Mount Merapi (2930m) is Indonesia’s most active volcano, it last erupted in 2010. The First peak was Pasar Bubrah and with another 2 hours of challenging climb came Garuda Summit. Sadly the views were not amazing but the team certainly were. A fantastic effort put in by these 12 ladies and we are super proud of them!
BASIC FIRST AID & CPR COURSE
On 23rd September, at Singapore Civil Defence Force a group of members completed the Community Emergency Preparedness Programme Tier 2.

SCDF has packaged the three skill sets, known as the ‘Triangle of Life’ skills, which includes: Basic First Aid, CPR-AED and Fire Safety.

A very effective, informative and professionally conducted session by Warrant Officer Akbar Ali and his team.

Thank you to all ATC participants for attending and to SCDF for getting us 'Response Ready'.
PINK RIBBON WALK 2017
With 1,850 women being diagnosed each year, breast cancer remains as Singapore’s most common cancer among women. Over 100 members joined ATC contingent to support Breast Cancer Foundation at the Pink Ribbon event for the 3.5km walk on the 7th October at the Waterfront Promenade. Although we went with much excitement, positive energy and a sea of pink, Mother Nature had a different agenda. Our patience and endurance were tested as we had to wait 2 hours for the walk to eventually begin after the rain, thunderstorm and lightning somewhat subsided. We can't wait to wear pink with you all again next year. Lets continue to support the fighters, admire the survivors and honour the taken. Never ever give up hope. Let's do this in true ATC eccentric way!

MOVIE NIGHT

"To those who are enthralled by mountains, their wonder is beyond all dispute. To those who are not, their allure is kind of madness."

We are organising a Mountain movie night for ATC members and their friends. A date to come for this one... Email us if you'd like to be a part of this.

CHOCOLATE MOUSE

You will fool EVERYONE with this mousse! Nobody will believe it is made from avocado! It is a staple in our house – it makes dessert when topped with raspberries, a cake topping or my boys even love it on rice cakes. It is LOADED with guilt-free goodness and will satisfy any sweet tooth!

Ingredients:
1.5 Large ripe avocados
6 Tablespoons cacao powder*
8 Tablespoons coconut cream (or you can also use banana instead)
1 Tablespoon al natural vanilla essence
2 Tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup (or more to taste preference)
½ Teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Pinch sea salt
(*N.B. Cacao powder is available on my store https://soniaosborne.com.au/sonias-store)

Method:
Cut avocado in half and remove the seed.
Scoop out the flesh and add to the food processor (or blender) with the coconut cream and cacao powder.
Blend until smooth.
Blend in remaining ingredients (you can use a cake beater to make extra light and fluffy).
Refrigerate for 1 hour before serving (if you can wait!!).

Pose of the month - Marichyasana C.

It is a seated twist which can be modified to suit the students ability, for exampled the twist can be deepened by crossing the limbs and also binding the arms. The pose pictured is a beginner-intermediate level.

Benefits:
Seated twists are grounding and a good way to stretch the back, shoulders and neck. They lengthen muscles in the back and help to create space in the spine. Twists in general are detoxifying because they massage the internal organs by compression and when we release from the twist detoxified blood flows to them. In daily life transverse movement is the action that we do less frequently and so the twists we practise in yoga ensure that we are extending our range of mobility.

How to:
Sit with legs extended in front of you, ensuring the sit bones are in contact with the floor. Bend the right knee close to the body and use the right fingers tips or hand flat on the floor behind your sacrum for support (not to tug into the twist!) On an exhale twist to the right and use the left elbow as a hook on the outside of the right thigh or knee. Stay here for five to ten breaths. For every inhale imagine you are lengthening from the crown of the head and on every exhale your shoulders and opening more as you gently deepen the twist.

MALAYSIAN TREK LEADERS AND EXPERTS
We would like to introduce our 3 Malaysian Trek Leaders and Experts, Hanani, Salwana and Ati.

Hanani currently manages a leadership development program for young working professionals and coach young leaders to dream, think and believe big. Her love of mountains has taken her to the likes of Mount Yong Belar, Mount Semeru to Annapurna Base Camp on which she proudly donned the traditional baju kurung or kebaya.

Salwana is also passionate about trekking, empowering women, developing business and writing. To date, she has trekked the Everest Base Camp, Mount Kinabalu, Mount Sinai, Mount Batur and Adam’s Peak. She equates trekking to experiencing the personal leadership lesson in self-discipline, self-awareness and self-management. Three impactful leadership attributes in one activity. Recently, she founded the Women in Commerce Circle, a strategic initiative under the International Women Federation of Commerce and Industry Malaysia.

Outside work, Ati travels extensively and enjoy learning different languages and cultures.  She paints and writes music in her spare time, and is a healthy living advocate and fitness enthusiast. As an avid trekker/hiker, and has trekked a number of trails and mountains in East and West Malaysia, as well as to Everest Base Camp, Nepal in April 2017.  She will be attempting to summit Stok Kangri, India (6,153masl) in August 2018.

Please read more about these amazing ladies on our website.
WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS
Welcome and Congratulations to Karen Pandya who successfully summited Mount Kinabalu in September, Michelle Lowbeer who conquered Mount Merapi this month. Well done ladies on all our training over the last few weeks! You deserve your summit success!

GOLDEN GIRLS PROJECT
On International Women’s Day - 8th March 2017 at our Golden Girls with Golden Hearts event, we raised S$2000. As presented that evening, this amount was split equally between 3 of the countries we visited this year. The countries we supported with causes close to our hearts are Kathmandu in Nepal, Tanzania in Africa and Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

KILIMANJARO
Team Kili 2017 carried on the connection made by Hazleen in 2016 with 2 local schools in Tanzania. They visited them with some personal donations and the share of money raised at the Golden Girls Event:

1.      Engilanget School of The Disabled (Arusha, Tanzania)
This school was founded by Anna Mollel, the 2012 Worlds Children’s Prize Winner.
She rescued 26 children from the street and gave them hope, a home, provided education and medical support through the Engilanget School.

2.      Precious Orphanage
In early 2010 in the small village of Nshupu, 9 malnourished orphans and abandoned children were sleeping on a cement floor without even a blanket or sufficient food. Seven years later, these children have a lovely permanent home, are attending school, have welcomed 6 additional children needing care to their family, and are blossoming. A primary school has been built providing free education to village children who otherwise wouldn't have access to school.  A new community center serves meals to the school children, hosts women's empowerment groups, health clinics, and adult education classes. The mission of Precious Project is to offer high quality education and care to orphaned and vulnerable children in rural Tanzania.
See for yourself here.

INDONESIA
Panti Asuhan Yatim Putri Aisyiyah in Yogyakarta is a home that provides care for 50 school aged girls from different backgrounds. Giving them shelter, food, education and enrichment activities. They also provide food and care to the elderly in the local area. A few members from Team Merapi visited the home after their trek and donated a share of the Golden Girls' donation.

NEPAL
In November our Everest Base Camp Expedition team will be supporting the following organisations:

1. Maiti Nepal
  • Founder Anuradha Koirala (CNN Hero of the year 2010)
  • MAITI Nepal was born out of a crusade to protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor and various forms of exploitation and torture.
  • Maiti's focus has always been on prevention of girl trafficking, a burning issue for Nepal. Trained to develop income-generation skills and provided Maiti's shelter until they are ready to stand on their feet.
2. Dr. Shilu Shrestha (Orthopaedic MS, Fellowship (Hand Surgery)
  • Shilu is a young hand surgeon based in Kathmandu. She was trained in Singapore but now back in Nepal to give back to her community. Shilu will be joining us on the trek to Everest Base Camp.
  • We will be having a conversation whilst we are trekking to see how we can support her vision to have a better health service for the people of Nepal.
  • You can contact Dr. Shilu on drshilu131@gmail.com.
3. Women's LEAD, Nepal
  • Prepare women leaders to co-create in the future
  • Provide young women in Nepal the skills, support and opportunities to become leaders and changemakers in their school, communities, nation and world
  • Members can participate in their mentorship programme
  • Their latest newsletter is available here.
4. Purano Guyesori Secondary School
  • A school in the outskirts of Kathmandu.
  • We developed a link with this school in Oct 2016 and money was donated. This year our EBC team will be helping to paint and provide furniture for at least 1 classroom with money collected at our Golden Girls with Golden Heart evening. If we can raise more money we will paint and furnish 3 classrooms.
You can view photographs taken during Hazleen's visit/meeting with the above earlier this year.

For further details about any of these projects or if you wish to donate further, please contact us on info@amazingtrekkersclub.com

We look forward to seeing you on the trail soon. In the meantime make sure you put the 23rd November in the diary for our 2018 Trek Launch. Happy Birthday to Trek Leader  Julia He!

Trust the Wait.... Embrace the Uncertainty ... we have our much anticipated international treks approaching and training has kicked in with earnest! At the same time we have had Singapore school holidays, the holy month of Ramadan, and international school summer breaks, it can cause chaos to normal routine training. We have re-arranged the training schedules with more evening stairs and night walks, introduced cycling as cardio training for those recovering from injury and it has been lovely to see some new faces at our trek training. It can be challenging to have me time during school break but keep going and fit in training and exercise whenever you can. Enjoy the beauty of becoming, when nothing is certain, anything is possible...

Every relationship has its milestones. The first date, the first kiss, the first orgasmic moment, the obsession and intense passion, the first celebration, regret and argument leading to the many it's "freaking over man. I'm never ever doing this again." Well the last 2 months, we witnessed first hand these milestones; that is our relationship with the mountain and peaks. Although we successfully completed many of our favourite and popular Asian Treks; they have not been easy nor drama free. Go back to the starting paragraph and now relate it to the mountain.
